HPT / HOW WE WORK

Clear thinking.
Hands-on building.

HPT helps businesses improve the way work gets done, usually when the work has outgrown the way it is organised. The focus is practical systems and process improvement, often in construction, manufacturing and distribution, where handovers and exceptions decide whether a week goes well. Peter Hughes leads the work directly, connecting operational needs with hands-on engineering.

Twenty years of making technology work in large organisations.

My background is technology leadership and large-scale programme delivery: integrating acquired companies, joining systems that were never designed to meet, and keeping services running for the people depending on them while all of that changed underneath. Work at that scale teaches one lesson repeatedly. The constraint is rarely the technology. It is the handover nobody owns, the exception with no route, the report that exists because somebody asked for it in 2014.

HPT brings that discipline to businesses that cannot afford a programme office, and do not need one. The same questions apply: who owns this step, what happens when it fails, and would a change to the process make the software unnecessary.

One conversation, from the problem to the product.

When we work together, you deal directly with me. We can discuss the commercial reason for a change, the experience people need, and the engineering that makes it work. I’m interested in the simplest credible route to a useful outcome, including when the right answer is to change a process before writing software.

What that means in practice

My work covers business automation, practical uses of AI, digital products and customer experiences. The work starts with understanding the people and the problem. It moves through a focused experiment and, where the evidence supports it, into something people can use and maintain.

Technology should earn its place.

A solution should make sense to the people using it and to the business paying for it. That means challenging assumptions early, making ownership clear and thinking about security, recovery and everyday operation as part of the design.

What I’ve built

I build and run products, not only advice about them. Each of these is live and public, and each one taught something that ends up in client work.

  • Poncdash: contact management that keeps up with how people actually move between roles and companies. An HPT product.
  • Crann.ai: owned spaces on the web with community discovery, where one sentence creates your first page.
  • luca.mobi: receipt capture and accounting preparation, turning messy inputs into clean records.
  • ThinkLink: music as an explorable universe, where artists and albums become places and their real connections the roads between them.
  • peter.hughes.team: my personal site, and more of the story behind this one.

You can also try this site’s working session: a small interactive tool that turns a general question into a more useful conversation.

Teaching it in the open

I run hands-on sessions for business owners and community groups on using AI as an everyday tool. No slides full of theory. People arrive with something they actually need and leave with a working result, which is a fair description of how I prefer to work with clients too.
